Microsoft SQL Server 2005
SQL Server 2005 delivers powerful, familiar tools to IT professionals as well as to information workers, reducing the complexity of creating, deploying, managing, and using enterprise data and analytical applications on platforms ranging from mobile devices to enterprise data systems. Through a comprehensive feature set, interoperability with existing systems, and automation of routine tasks, SQL Server 2005 provides a complete data solution for enterprises of all sizes.
Improvements to Microsoft SQL Server 2005
SQL Server 2005 offers significant improvements in key areas including manageability, availability, performance, and security.
- Easier Manageability
Microsoft System Center Operations Manager enables large numbers of servers that run SQL Server 2005 to be monitored from a central console, thus enabling widely dispersed deployments with high availability.
- Enhanced Availability through Database Mirroring
Database mirroring relies on a new copy-on-write technology that is included in SQL Server 2005. This availability option requires three servers—a principal, a mirror and a witness. The principal server writes each transaction to the database and then sends a copy of the transaction to a mirror server, which applies the copied transaction as soon as it is received. The witness assists the principal and the mirror to determine whether the other is up and running. If the witness detects that the principal server is no longer available, it instantly designates the mirror server as the new principal server and redirects all client transactions to the new principal server. This failover process has very low latency and can be used to resynchronize the failed principal when it comes back online as the mirror.
- Enhanced Availability through Failover Clustering
New in SQL Server 2005 is support for failover clustering in Analysis Services, Notification Services, and Replication Services. With the addition of cluster awareness to these services, critical business intelligence (BI) applications can have the same level of high availability as other SQL Server applications.
- Higher Availability through Replication
SQL Server 2005 offers enhanced replication using a new peer-to-peer model that provides a new topology in which databases can be synchronized transactionally with any identical peer database.
- Increased Performance
SQL Server 2005 performance has been significantly improved with decision support workloads, OLAP, data integration, and Full-Text Search. Scalability advancements such as snapshot isolation and 64-bit support enable you to build and deploy your most demanding applications using SQL Server 2005.
- Enhanced Security
SQL Server 2005 makes significant enhancements to the security model of the database platform, providing more precise and flexible control to enable tighter security of the data.SQL Server 2005 authentication features make it harder to get access to a server that is running SQL Server. Granting and controlling what a user can do when the user is authenticated is far more flexible and provides more granular permissions.
