Virtual PC for Mac consultingOrganizations often rely on Windows to host company-wide line-of-business applications. For businesses with a mix of Mac and Windows desktops, Microsoft offers two solutions for running Windows applications on a Mac: Virtual PC for Mac and Remote Desktop Connection Client 3 for Mac. Progent's Apple-certified Mac consultants can help you choose the appropriate solution for your business and can help you configure and support your mixed-platform network to achieve maximum business value.

Microsoft Virtual PC for Mac
Virtual PC for Mac emulates an Intel-type processor and turns a Mac into a virtual Windows machine that allows you to access PC-only software, files, networks and devices. Processor emulation is CPU intensive on the client Mac and trades off some performance for convenience, flexibility and a potentially rich feature set. Virtual PC 7 is compatible with the Mac G5 processor and Mac OS X version 10.3 (Panther) and is included with the Professional Edition of Microsoft Office for Mac.

Key features of Virtual PC 7 for Mac include:

  • Share Folders and Removable Media
You can share folders and other media between Windows and Mac and you can save files in a folder on your Mac and retrieve them from within Windows.

  • Use Both Mac and PC Peripherals
You can use a variety of PC and Mac peripherals including printers, external drives and more, even if they were designed for use exclusively with a PC.

  • Cut and Paste Between Platforms
Virtual PC 7 and your Mac share the same clipboard, making it easy to copy and paste between Windows and Mac programs.

  • Fast Save
You can shut down your virtual PC in one easy step and easily relaunch from where you left off.

  • Zero Configuration Printing
For Panther users (Mac OS X version 10.3), Virtual PC 7 eliminates the need to download special printer drivers. You can click Print and tap into the same printing functionality and drivers used by your Mac OS.
Microsoft Remote Desktop Connection Client for Mac
Remote Desktop Connection Client for Mac allows you to connect to a Windows-based computer and work with programs and files on that computer from your Mac. Terminal emulation requires relatively little processing power from the client Mac and therefore in most situations offers higher performance than processor emulation. To connect to a Windows-based computer, you need network access and permissions to connect to the computer, and the computer must be running Terminal Services or Remote Desktop Services. Remote Desktop for Mac is available as a free download and is compatible with Windows Server 2003, Windows XP Professional and Windows 2000 Server.

Remote Desktop Connection Client 1.0.3 for Mac provides improved stability when you minimize the client window and when you copy and paste data from the client window to Macintosh applications. Stability is also improved for users of Mac OS X 10.3 and later, and when Remote Desktop Connection Client is used on Macintosh computers with PowerPC G5 processors.
