Altaro VM Backup protects current versions of Hyper-V and VMware and works with most storage technologies
Altaro VM Backup comes with powerful capabilities in vital areas of backup includung replication, prompt restoration, and management and reporting.
Backup and Replication
Altaro VM Backup offers fast, efficient, and safe backup for data protection and archiving plus offsite data replication for reliable recovery. Major backup and replication features include:
- Ransomware Defense leveraging Immutable Cloud Storage: Immutability for cloud object storage allows tamper-proof data for a set duration so that backup data cannot be erased or modified by anyone including root users. Immutable storage provides an extra level of protection and recoverability in case of a ransomware breach.
- Global Augmented In-Line Deduplication: In-line deduplication saves only changed data to backup storage devices, conserving bandwidth, cutting backup storage demands, and enhancing performance. Deduplication works with data on single VMs and on multiple VMs globally.
- Continuous Data Protection: Instead of performing one-a-day backups, you can schedule backup spacing to as short as five minutes to lower your Recovery Point Objective (RPO).
- Concurrent Backups: You can back up many virtual machines at the same time, allowing you to conduct backup operations within shorter low-activity time windows when the most network bandwidth is open and network throughput is less critical.
- Live/Hot Backup: Altaro's integration with Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) allows you to back up VMs without requiring downtime.
- Cluster Shared Volumes and VMware vCenter: The ability to back up VMs within a Windows Hyper-V Failover Cluster (with or without Cluster Shared Volumes) or within a VMware vCenter environment supports large-scale deployments.
- Offsite Replication: To assist with business recovery, you can set up the Altaro Offsite Server utility on a remote server for keeping a copy of your backups at a different site.
- Flexible Scheduling and Retention Policies: You can set different backup schedules and retention policies for individual VMs.
Backup scheduling and retention options for Altaro are simple to configure, review and edit
- Workload Consistent Protection: Altaro can use Volume Shadow Copy Service and all VSS Writers running within the target VM when executing a backup. Applications including Microsoft Exchange and Microsoft SQL will be aware the backup has taken place and automatically run the appropriate maintenance jobs such as truncating VLFs.
- Military-Class Encryption: Before copying data to a backup destination, you have the ability to encrypt it with the 256-Bit AES encryption standard.
- Virtual Disk Exclusion: You can select which Virtual Disks to include or exclude in your virtual machine backups.
- Grandfather-Father-Son Archiving (GFS): On top of your continuous and scheduled backups, you can implement an additional backup schedule to create and archive a backup version each week, month and year.
- Cloud Backup to Microsoft Azure: Altaro VM Backup enables backup to an Azure Block Blob storage account, which is the most affordable storage alternative available on the Azure cloud.
Altaro VM Backup allows you to protect VMs hosted on-premises, offsite or in the cloud
- Cloud Backup to Amazon S3 and Wasabi: Altaro VM Backup supports seamless backup to Amazon S3 and Wasabi. No additional resources operating in the cloud are required to support storage for backup.
- Back up to multiple remote locations: For improved robustness, you can make copies of virtual machines on multiple remote sites including multiple public clouds such as Microsoft Azure and Amazon Simple Storage Service (S3).
Restore and Disaster Recovery
Altaro VM Backup includes a rich set of tools for point-in-time recovery of VMs and files that have been backed up on schedule and have to be restored. In the event of a disaster, Altaro VM Backup has tools for quickly recovering an entire site from the latest replicated version stored offsite.
- Recover as Clone: You can recover a VM backup to a new location with a new name, permitting the cloned virtual machine to run beside the original VM. This eliminates the necessity to write over active virtual machines.
- Restore to Different Host: You can recover a virtual machine backup to a different Hypervisor. The virtual machine can be restored from the on-prem backup location, or directly from the remote copy location. (You cannot cross-recover between Hyper-V and VMware.)
- Boot from Backup: You can immediately boot any VM version directly from the backup device for verification or to achieve a significant improvement in RTO in a disaster recovery scenario.
- File-Level Recovery: You can quickly recover specific files and folders from any VM backup.
- WAN-Optimized Replication: You can make continuous backups of your virtual machines to a different site and transfer immediately to the backup location in case a calamity disables your primary virtual machines. This can significantly shrink your Recovery Time Objective and get your organization back online quickly.
- Microsoft Exchange Item-Level Restore: You can retrieve specific emails from within the Exchange Mailbox database.
Altaro Virtual Machine Backup enables you to recover specific emails from an Exchange Mailbox database
- Recover Various Versions: You can restore from different periods instead of being restricted to the last backup.
- Sandbox Restores and Verification: You can program or launch manually tests to assess the accuracy of your backup data. You can verify backup folders without connecting the VM to your Hyper-V or VMware Hypervisor, or you can run a complete test recovery to a replicant and verify that the recovered virtual machine can boot.
- Backup Health Monitor: Backup storage accuracy can be monitored on demand and repaired automatically as a component of the next backup process.
Management and Reporting
The web-based Cloud Management Console (CMC) centralizes management, monitoring and reporting for Altaro VM Backup deployments. The CMC provides a centralized portal for processes like initiating backups, establishing on-premises and remote backup locations, defining encryption keys, and recovering virtual machines. The CMC also saves time by allowing you to set specialized templates with schedules, retention policies and advanced settings and apply them to multiple virtual machines across different hosts. In addition, you can use the Cloud Management Console to observe backup procedures in real time, review historic reports on operations and errors, and program the Cloud Management Console to send email notices for successful or failed tasks and other useful information.
