Altaro VM Backup protects popular releases of Hyper-V and VMware and works with most backup technologies
Altaro VM Backup offers advanced features in vital areas of data protection such as replication, prompt restoration, and centralized management.
Replication
Altaro VM Backup offers rapid, economical, and secure backup for data protection and archiving plus remote replication for reliable restoration. Major backup and replication features include:
- Ransomware Protection leveraging Immutable Cloud Storage: Immutability for cloud storage enables tamper-proof data while under the defined policy so that backup data cannot be erased or modified by any user including administrators or root users. Immutable storage provides another level of protection and restoration ability in the event of a successful ransomware attack.
- Augmented In-Line Deduplication: Altaro's in-line variable block size deduplication sends only changed data to backup devices, conserving bandwidth, minimizing backup storage requirements, and enhancing performance. Deduplication works with data on single virtual machines and on multiple VMs.
- Continuous Data Protection (CDP): Instead of running daily backups, you can schedule backup intervals to as short as five minutes to minimize your RPO.
- Concurrent Backups: You can back up multiple VMs concurrently, allowing you to carry out backup processes within shorter low-activity time windows while more network bandwidth is open and workload throughput is less urgent.
- Live/Hot Backup: Altaro's integration with Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) permits you to back up VMs without incurring downtime.
- Cluster Shared Volumes and VMware vCenter: The ability to back up VMs running in a Hyper-V Failover Cluster (with or without CSV) or in a vCenter system supports large-scale deployments.
- Offsite Replication: To assist with disaster recovery, you can deploy the Altaro Offsite Server utility on an external server for storing a copy of your backups at a remote location.
- Flexible Scheduling and Retention Policies: You can set different backup schedules and retention policies for individual VMs.
Scheduling and retention options for Altaro are easy to configure, review and revise
- Application Specific Backups: Altaro can use Volume Shadow Copy Service and all VSS Writers working inside the target VM when executing a backup. Apps like Microsoft Exchange and Microsoft SQL will be aware the backup has taken place and automatically proceed with the appropriate maintenance jobs such as truncating VLFs.
- Military-Class Encryption: Prior to copying your data to a backup device, you have the ability to encrypt it with the AES-256 encryption standard.
- Virtual Disk Exclude: You have the ability to select which Virtual Disks to include or exclude in your VM backups.
- Grandfather-Father-Son Archiving: On top of your continuous and scheduled backups, you can implement a special backup schedule to create and archive a backup version each week, month and year.
- Cloud Backup to Microsoft Azure: Altaro VM Backup allows backup to an Azure Block Blob storage account, which is the least expensive storage option offered on the Microsoft Azure cloud.
Altaro VM Backup allows you to back up VMs hosted on-site, offsite or in the cloud
- Cloud Backup to Amazon S3 and Wasabi: Altaro VM Backup VM Backup supports native backup to Amazon S3 and Wasabi. No additional resources running in the cloud are needed to provide storage for backup.
- Back up to multiple remote locations: For better robustness, you can create copies of VMs on multiple remote locations including multiple clouds like Microsoft Azure and Amazon Simple Storage Service (S3).
Restoration and Disaster Recovery
Altaro VM Backup VM Backup offers a rich set of tools for point-in-time recovery of VMs and files that have been backed up periodically and need to be recovered. In the event of a disaster, Altaro VM Backup VM Backup has utilities for quickly recovering a complete site using the latest copy protected on a safe remote site.
- Restore as Clone: You can recover a VM backup to a new destination with a new name, allowing the cloned virtual machine to run side by side with the original virtual machine. This avoids the need to write over active VMs.
- Recover to Different Host: You can restore a VM backup to a new or different Hypervisor. The virtual machine can be restored from the on-prem backup location, or directly from the offsite copy location. (You may not cross-restore between Hyper-V and VMware.)
- Boot from Backup: You can instantly boot any virtual machine version directly from the backup device either for verification or to achieve a significant improvement in Recovery Time Objective (RTO) during a disaster recovery event.
- File-Level Restore: You can quickly recover individual files and folders from any VM backup.
- WAN-Optimized Replication: You can make ongoing copies of your VMs to an off-premises location and switch immediately to the backup site in case a disaster takes out your main VMs. This can dramatically shrink your Recovery Time Objective and put your organization back online quickly.
- Microsoft Exchange Item-Level Recovery: You can retrieve specific emails and attachments from the Exchange Mailbox.
Altaro Virtual Machine Backup allows you to recover specific emails from an Exchange Mailbox database
- Recover Different Versions: You can restore from different periods instead of being limited to the last backup copy.
- Sandbox Restores and Testing: This feature lets you schedule or launch manually test drills to confirm the integrity of your backup. You can verify backup folders without attaching the VM to your Windows Hyper-V or VMware Hypervisor, or you can execute a complete confirmation restore to a replicant and verify that the recovered virtual machine is able to boot.
- Backup Health Monitor: Backup copy integrity can be monitored on demand and fixed automatically as part of the subsequent backup process.
Management and Reporting
Altaro's browser-based Cloud Management Console (CMC) centralizes management, monitoring and reporting for Altaro Virtual Machine Backup environments. The Cloud Management Console provides a single online portal for tasks such as launching backups, establishing local and remote backup sites, configuring encryption keys, and restoring virtual machines. The CMC also saves time by permitting you to build custom templates with schedules, retention details and advanced settings and apply them to various VMs across different hosts. Also, you can use the Cloud Management Console to observe backup procedures in real time, review historic reports on jobs and problems, and program the CMC to generate email alerts for completed or failed tasks and other important information.
