Altaro protects popular releases of Hyper-V and VMware and uses common backup technologies
Altaro VM Backup comes with advanced features in critical areas of data protection such as replication, fast restoration, and centralized management.
Replication
Altaro VM Backup offers rapid, economical, and secure backup for data protection and archiving plus offsite data replication for dependable restoration. Top backup and replication capabilities include:
- Ransomware Defense leveraging Immutable Cloud Storage: Immutable backup for cloud storage enables tamper-proof data for a set duration so that backup data cannot be erased or modified by anyone including administrators or root users. This provides another level of protection and restoration ability in case of a ransomware breach.
- Global Augmented In-Line Deduplication: Altaro's in-line deduplication saves only altered data to backup devices, conserving bandwidth, cutting storage requirements, and enhancing throughput. Altaro's deduplication works with data on single VMs and across multiple virtual machines globally.
- Continuous Data Protection (CDP): Instead of running one-a-day backups, you can schedule backup intervals to as brief as five minutes to lower your Recovery Point Objective.
- Concurrent Backups: You can back up multiple virtual machines concurrently, allowing you to conduct backup processes within briefer low-activity time windows while more bandwidth is available and workload performance is less urgent.
- Live/Hot Backup: Altaro's integration with Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) permits you to back up VMs without incurring downtime.
- Cluster Shared Volumes and VMware vCenter: The ability to back up VMs running in a Hyper-V Failover Cluster (with or without Cluster Shared Volumes) or within a vCenter system supports large-scale deployments.
- Remote Replication: To facilitate business recovery, you can deploy the Altaro Offsite Server utility on an external server for keeping a copy of your backups at a remote site.
- Flexible Scheduling and Retention Policies: You can set different backup schedules and retention policies for individual VMs.
Scheduling and retention policies for Altaro VM Backup are easy to configure, check and revise
- Workload Consistent Protection: Altaro can utilize Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) and any VSS Writers working inside the protected virtual machine when making a backup. Applications like Exchange and Microsoft SQL will sense the backup has taken place and automatically proceed with the appropriate maintenance procedures such as truncating transaction logs.
- Military-Class Encryption: Prior to copying data to a backup device, you have the option of encrypting it with the 256-Bit AES encryption standard.
- Virtual Disk Exclusion: You have the ability to select which Virtual Disks to include or exclude in your VM backups.
- Grandfather-Father-Son Archiving: On top of your continuous and daily backups, you can set up an additional schedule to make and archive a backup copy each week, month and year.
- Cloud Backup to Microsoft Azure: Altaro supports backup to a Microsoft Azure Block Blob account, which is the most affordable storage alternative offered on the Azure cloud.
Altaro VM Backup allows you to back up VMs hosted on-site, remotely or in a public cloud
- Cloud Backup to Amazon S3 and Wasabi: Altaro VM Backup supports native backup to Amazon S3 and Wasabi. No additional resources operating in the cloud are needed to provide storage for backup.
- Back up to multiple remote datacenters: For better robustness, you can create copies of virtual machines on multiple remote locations including multiple clouds like Microsoft Azure and Amazon Simple Storage Service (S3).
Restoration and Disaster Recovery
Altaro VM Backup includes a comprehensive toolset for granular point-in-time recovery of VMs and files that have been backed up on schedule and have to be recovered. In case of a catastrophic event, Altaro VM Backup has tools for quickly recovering a complete site using the most recent copy protected on a safe remote site.
- Recover as Clone: You can restore a virtual machine backup to a new destination with a new name, allowing the cloned VM to operate alongside the original VM. This avoids the necessity to write over live virtual machines.
- Restore to Different Host: You can recover a VM backup to a new or different host. The virtual machine can be restored from the on-prem backup location, or directly from the offsite copy location. (You cannot cross-restore between Hyper-V and VMware.)
- Boot from Backup: You can immediately boot any virtual machine version directly from the backup location either for testing or to create a major improvement in Recovery Time Objective during a disaster recovery event.
- File-Level Recovery: You can quickly recover individual files from any VM copy.
- WAN-Optimized Replication: You can make continuous backups of your VMs to a different location and switch instantly to the copy site in the event that a disaster disables your main VMs. This can dramatically shrink your Recovery Time Objective (RTO) and get your organization back online quickly.
- Exchange Item-Level Recovery: You can recover specific emails from within the Exchange Mailbox.
Altaro VM Backup permits you to restore specific emails from an Exchange Mailbox
- Recover Different Versions: You can recover from multiple periods instead of being restricted to the last backup.
- Sandbox Restores and Verification: This feature lets you program or launch manually tests to confirm the accuracy of your backup data. You can verify backup folders without attaching the virtual machine to your Windows Hyper-V or VMware host, or you can run a full confirmation recovery to a replicant and ensure that the restored VM is able to boot.
- Backup Health Monitor: Backup storage accuracy can be monitored proactively and repaired automatically as part of the next backup operation.
Management and Reporting
The web-based Cloud Management Console (CMC) unifies management, monitoring and reporting for Altaro Virtual Machine Backup environments. The Cloud Management Console offers a single online portal for tasks such as initiating backups, setting up local and off-premises backup sites, defining encryption keys, and recovering virtual machines. The CMC also saves time by permitting you to set custom templates with backup schedules, retention details and other settings and apply them to multiple VMs across different hosts. In addition, you can utilize the CMC to monitor backup procedures as they occur, review historic reports on operations and problems, and configure the Cloud Management Console to generate email alerts for successful or failed processes and other important information.
