RIM BlackBerry recently introduced BlackBerry Enterprise Server Express (BESX), offering FREE server software and Client Access Licenses (CALs) while providing the core mobility, security, and manageability features of BlackBerry Enterprise Server including wireless sync and remote access to files and applications. But the cost savings don't stop at free server software and CALs. You now have the option to choose BlackBerry Internet Service (BIS) rather than the Enterprise Server carrier plan, saving you $10-$20 a month for each of your BlackBerry users!
BESX can be installed directly on an Exchange or SBS server (recommended for up to 75 users) or on a dedicated server to support up to 2,000 users. It's ideal for small- and medium-sized businesses who until now could not financially justify connecting employees' BlackBerry smartphones to their corporate IT systems.
The Express version of BES does not provide high availability, monitoring, SQL database mirroring or desk phone/PBX integration and reduces the supported IT polices from 450 to 35. In addition, BIS BlackBerry Smartphone data plan users will be required to perform an initial wired enterprise activation to connect to the BES. However, after that they will enjoy the full wireless email and organizer data experience including calendar, contacts, tasks and notes. BlackBerry BES data plan users can still enterprise activate their devices wirelessly.
