Altaro VM Backup comes with advanced capabilities in crucial areas of backup includung replication, fast restoration, and management and reporting.
Backup and Replication
Altaro VM Backup delivers fast, economical, and safe backup for data protection and archiving plus offsite data replication for dependable restoration. Top backup and replication capabilities include:
- Ransomware Defense leveraging Immutable Cloud Storage: Immutable backup for cloud storage enables tamper-proof data while under the defined policy so that backup data cannot be modified or deleted by anyone including administrators or root users. This provides an extra level of security and recoverability in the event of a ransomware breach.
- Global Augmented In-Line Deduplication: Altaro's in-line variable block size deduplication saves only changed data to backup storage devices or sites, conserving bandwidth, cutting storage demands, and enhancing performance. Deduplication works with data on single VMs as well as on multiple virtual machines globally.
- Continuous Data Protection: Instead of performing daily backups, you can reduce backup intervals to as brief as five minutes to lower your Recovery Point Objective (RPO).
- Concurrent Backups: You can back up multiple VMs at the same time, which makes it possible to conduct backup processes within briefer low-activity time windows when more network bandwidth is open and network performance is less urgent.
- Live/Hot Backup: Altaro's integration with Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service permits you to back up VMs without incurring downtime.
- Cluster Shared Volumes and VMware vCenter: The ability to protect virtual machines within a Hyper-V Failover Cluster (with or without Cluster Shared Volumes) or within a vCenter system allows larger deployments.
- Remote Replication: To assist with disaster recovery, you can deploy the Altaro Offsite Server tool on a remote server for keeping a copy of your backups at a different site.
- Flexible Scheduling and Retention Policies: You can set different backup schedules and retention policies for individual VMs.
Scheduling and retention policies for Altaro VM Backup are simple to configure, check and edit
- Application Consistent Protection: Altaro VM Backup can utilize Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) and any VSS Writers running within the protected VM when making a backup. Apps including Exchange and Microsoft SQL will sense the backup has happened and automatically run the appropriate maintenance tasks like truncating transaction logs.
- Military-Grade Encryption: Before copying data to a backup destination, you have the ability to encrypt it using the 256-Bit AES encryption standard.
- Virtual Disk Exclusion: You can select which Virtual Disks to include or ignore in your VM backups.
- Grandfather-Father-Son Archiving (GFS): On top of your continuous and scheduled backups, you can implement a special backup schedule to make and archive a backup copy every week, month and year.
- Cloud Backup to Azure: Altaro enables backup to an Azure Block Blob account, which is the most affordable storage option available on the Microsoft Azure cloud.
Altaro Virtual Machine Backup permits you to back up VMs hosted on-premises, offsite or in a public cloud
- Cloud Backup to Amazon S3 and Wasabi: Altaro VM Backup VM Backup supports seamless backup to Amazon S3 and Wasabi. No additional resources operating in the cloud are needed to provide storage for backup.
- Back up to multiple offsite locations: For better resilience, you can make copies of virtual machines on multiple off-premises locations including multiple clouds such as Azure and Amazon Simple Storage Service (S3).
Restore and Disaster Recovery
Altaro VM Backup VM Backup offers a comprehensive set of tools for granular point-in-time recovery of VMs and data files that have been copied on schedule and have to be restored. In a disaster recovery scenario, Altaro VM Backup has utilities for quickly restoring an entire site using the most recent replicated version stored on a safe remote site.
- Recover as Clone: You can recover a virtual machine backup to a new location with a new name, permitting the cloned VM to run beside the original virtual machine. This eliminates the need to overwrite live virtual machines.
- Restore to Different Host: You can restore a VM backup to a different Hypervisor. The virtual machine can be restored from the on-prem backup location, or directly from the offsite copy location. (You may not cross-recover between Hyper-V and VMware Hypervisors.)
- Boot from Backup: You can immediately boot any VM version directly from the backup device either for verification or to create a significant improvement in Recovery Time Objective in a disaster recovery scenario.
- File-Level Restore: You can rapidly recover individual files and folders from any virtual machine backup.
- WAN-Optimized Replication: You can make ongoing copies of your virtual machines to a different site and transfer immediately to the backup location in case a disaster takes out your primary virtual machines. This can significantly improve your Recovery Time Objective (RTO) and get your organization back in business quickly.
- Exchange Item-Level Recovery: You can retrieve individual emails and attachments from the Exchange Mailbox.
Altaro VM Backup enables you to recover specific emails from an Exchange Mailbox
- Recover Various Backup Versions: You can restore from different periods rather than being restricted to the last copy.
- Sandbox Restores and Testing: This feature lets you program or launch by hand tests to assess the accuracy of your backup. You can validate backup folders without connecting the virtual machine to your Windows Hyper-V or VMware host, or you can execute a complete confirmation recovery to a clone and ensure that the restored virtual machine is able to boot.
- Backup Health Monitor: Backup storage accuracy can be checked on demand and fixed automatically as a component of the subsequent backup process.
Management and Reporting
Altaro's browser-based Cloud Management Console unifies management, monitoring and reporting for Altaro Virtual Machine Backup deployments. The CMC offers a centralized online portal for processes like initiating backups, establishing on-premises and remote backup locations, configuring encryption keys, and recovering virtual machines. The CMC also conserves time by permitting you to build specialized templates with schedules, retention policies and other settings and apply them to various virtual machines across a selection of hosts. In addition, you can utilize the CMC to monitor backup activities as they occur, review historic reports on operations and problems, and program the Cloud Management Console to generate email alerts for successful or failed processes and other useful information.
