Whenever you define a team you start a Microsoft 365 group, a SharePoint Online web site and document collection, a Microsoft Exchange Online group mailbox/calendar, a OneNote team notebook, and a persistent chat workspace. If you make a team from an existing Office/Microsoft 365 group, that group's members, SharePoint Online web site, shared mailbox, and OneNote notebook are all added to Teams. A team can be open or private and can have up to 10,000 members.
Channels are chat workspaces within a team. Every channel other than the default General channel is dedicated to a theme you define. All discussions, file sharing, and conferences for a given theme occur within the appropriate channel. Channels can be open to all team members or limited to a defined subset of the team. Authorized team participants can expand a channel by inserting apps that include tabs, connectors, and bots. Any files shared within a channel using the Files tab are located on a SharePoint Online document collection. Managers can define policies to allow or reject apps and services for a channel. Meetings held within a channel can include shared whiteboards, notes, and messages. Integration with Microsoft Stream allows meetings to be recorded, saved, and replayed.
