Backup and Replication
Altaro VM Backup delivers rapid, efficient, and secure backup for data protection plus offsite data replication for dependable recovery. Major backup and replication capabilities include:
Restoration and Disaster Recovery
- Global Augmented In-Line Deduplication: In-line deduplication sends only changed data to backup devices or sites, reducing network traffic, minimizing storage requirements, and improving throughput. Deduplication applies to data on lone VMs and across multiple virtual machines globally.
- Continuous Data Protection: Rather than running daily backups, you can schedule backup intervals to as brief as five minutes to lower your RPO.
- Concurrency: You can back up multiple virtual machines simultaneously, which makes it possible to conduct backup processes during briefer low-activity time windows while more bandwidth is available and network throughput is less urgent.
- Hot Backup: Altaro's integration with Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) permits you to back up VMs without requiring downtime.
- Cluster Shared Volumes and VMware vCenter: The ability to back up virtual machines within a Hyper-V Failover Cluster (with or without CSV) or in a VMware vCenter system allows larger deployments.
- Remote Replication: To assist with disaster recovery, you can set up the Altaro Offsite Server tool on a remote server for keeping a copy of your backups at a different location.
- Flexible Scheduling and Retention Policies: You can set different backup schedules and retention policies for individual VMs.
Scheduling and retention options for Altaro VM Backup are simple to configure, check and revise
- Workload Consistent Protection: Altaro VM Backup can use Volume Shadow Copy Service and all VSS Writers running within the protected virtual machine when executing a backup. Applications such as Microsoft Exchange and Microsoft SQL will be aware the backup has taken place and automatically run the relevant maintenance tasks like truncating virtual log files.
- Military-Grade Encryption: Prior to copying data to a backup device, you have the option of encrypting it with the 256-Bit AES standard.
- Virtual Disk Exclude: You have the ability to select which Virtual Disks to include or ignore in your virtual machine backups.
- Grandfather-Father-Son Archiving (GFS): On top of your continuous and daily backups, you can implement an additional schedule to create and archive a backup version every week, month and year.
- Cloud Backup to Microsoft Azure: Altaro enables backup to a Microsoft Azure Block Blob storage account, which is the least expensive storage alternative offered on the Microsoft Azure cloud.
Altaro VM Backup allows you to back up VMs hosted on-site, remotely or in the cloud
- Cloud Backup to Amazon S3 and Wasabi: Altaro VM Backup supports native backup to Amazon S3 and Wasabi. No extra resources operating in the cloud are required to provide backup storage.
- Back up to multiple remote datacenters: For improved resilience, you can create copies of virtual machines on multiple off-premises locations including multiple clouds such as Microsoft Azure and Amazon Simple Storage Service (S3).
Altaro VM Backup VM Backup includes a comprehensive set of tools for granular point-in-time recovery of virtual machines and data files that have been copied periodically and need to be restored. In case of a catastrophic event, Altaro VM Backup VM Backup has utilities for quickly restoring an entire site from the latest replicated version stored on a safe remote site.
Management and Reporting
- Restore as Clone: You can recover a VM backup to a new destination with a new name, allowing the cloned VM to run alongside the original virtual machine. This eliminates the necessity to overwrite active virtual machines.
- Restore to Different Host: You can restore a virtual machine backup to a new or different host. The VM can be recovered from the local backup location, or directly from the remote copy location. (You may not cross-restore between Windows Hyper-V and VMware Hypervisors.)
- Boot from Backup: You can immediately boot any virtual machine copy directly from the backup device either for verification or to create a significant reduction in RTO in a disaster recovery scenario.
- File-Level Restore: You can quickly restore individual files from any virtual machine backup.
- WAN-Optimized Replication: You can make continuous backups of your VMs to a different site and transfer instantly to the copy site in case a disaster disables your primary virtual machines. This can dramatically reduce your RTO and put your organization back in business fast.
- Exchange Item-Level Recovery: You can recover specific emails from within the Exchange Mailbox database.
Altaro Virtual Machine Backup permits you to restore individual emails from an Exchange Mailbox database
- Restore Different Backup Versions: You can recover from multiple points in time rather than being restricted to the latest copy.
- Sandbox Restores and Testing: You can program or run by hand validation tests to assess the accuracy of your backup. You can validate backup folders without connecting the VM to your Windows Hyper-V or VMware Hypervisor, or you can execute a full confirmation restore to a replicant and ensure that the recovered virtual machine can boot.
- Backup Health Monitor: Backup storage accuracy can be checked proactively and fixed automatically as part of the subsequent backup operation.
Altaro's browser-based Cloud Management Console (CMC) unifies management, monitoring and reporting for Altaro Virtual Machine Backup deployments. The Cloud Management Console provides a single portal for processes like initiating backups, establishing on-premises and remote backup locations, configuring encryption keys, and recovering virtual machines. The CMC also conserves time by allowing you to set custom templates with schedules, retention policies and other settings and apply them to multiple virtual machines across different hosts. In addition, you can utilize the CMC to observe backup procedures in real time, review historic reports on jobs and errors, and program the Cloud Management Console to send email notices for successful or failed tasks and other important information.
