Active Directory Health Check
A valuable deliverable of the ProSight Network Audit Basic service is the Active Directory Health Check. This report documents the state of Active Directory, DNS, DHCP and Group Policy; compares these services to industry best practices; and proposes how any discovered errors or misconfiguration could be corrected. This can be a vital service because an unhealthy AD and related services can lead to:
- Full network outages
- Significant delays in authentication or access to services (file/print/etc)
- Complete data loss
- Bottlenecks to disaster recovery
- Security vulnerabilities
- Poor Internet performance
One of the most common problems with Active Directory deployments is unused or stale AD accounts. To keep the AD environment safe and secure, it is essential to disable and remove these accounts. This is why IT auditors put special emphasis on stale or inactive accounts. In many industries, removing these accounts is a requirement for meeting security compliance standards.
What does a messy Active Directory actually mean to you?
- Lots of stale resources
- Little insight into group permissions and access ('group grants')
- Lack of an established and efficient process for provisioning and de-provisioning accounts
- No defined owners identified or involved
- Problems with operations and monitoring
Reasons for cleaning up Active Directory include:
- Security: Understand who has access to what, how they received that access, and what they are doing with it
- Group Transformation: Drive consistency across groups for easier management and compliance
- Audit & Compliance: Pass internal and external audits to remain compliant
- Identity Management: Better secure structured and unstructured data with a clean Active Directory integrating with an Identity Access Management (IAM) solution
- Migration & Consolidation: Clean-up Active Directory to facilitate a merger with another organization
The AD Health Check includes the installation of ProSight WAN Watch discovery tools plus automated network scans and a manual health check. Key discovery processes and topics include:
- Existing DC roles and placement
- Physical site layout
- IP layout and DHCP
- Existing hardware and software inventory
- Verify NTFRS/DFSR and group policy replication/configuration
- Verify AD replication
- Verify DNS/domain/forest zones
- Identify stale/lingering objects
- Security assessment
- Forest/Domain functional levels
Progent reviews the collected information, documents errors and misconfigurations, and creates a detailed map of physical network connectivity. Once all AD information is collected, Progent confers with the client to discuss findings and propose solutions to any problems.
