Ransomware : Your Worst Information Technology Nightmare
Ransomware Recovery ConsultantsRansomware has become a modern cyberplague that presents an extinction-level danger for businesses unprepared for an attack. Multiple generations of ransomware like the CrySIS, Fusob, Bad Rabbit, Syskey and MongoLock cryptoworms have been out in the wild for many years and continue to inflict damage. Recent versions of ransomware such as Ryuk, Maze, Sodinokibi, Netwalker, Snatch or Egregor, plus more unnamed newcomers, not only encrypt on-line data but also infiltrate most accessible system protection. Information replicated to the cloud can also be encrypted. In a vulnerable environment, this can render any restore operations hopeless and basically sets the network back to zero.

Getting back programs and information following a ransomware outage becomes a race against time as the targeted organization struggles to stop the spread, clear the virus, and restore enterprise-critical operations. Due to the fact that ransomware takes time to replicate, penetrations are frequently launched at night, when successful penetrations tend to take more time to recognize. This multiplies the difficulty of promptly mobilizing and coordinating a capable response team.

Progent makes available a range of help services for securing enterprises from ransomware penetrations. Among these are staff training to help identify and not fall victim to phishing attempts, ProSight Active Security Monitoring (ASM) for remote monitoring and management, along with installation of the latest generation security solutions with artificial intelligence technology from SentinelOne to discover and suppress day-zero threats quickly. Progent in addition offers the services of seasoned ransomware recovery engineers with the talent and perseverance to re-deploy a breached network as soon as possible.

Progent's Ransomware Recovery Support Services
Following a crypto-ransomware event, even paying the ransom in cryptocurrency does not guarantee that criminal gangs will respond with the codes to unencrypt any of your files. Kaspersky Labs ascertained that 17% of ransomware victims never restored their files even after having sent off the ransom, resulting in increased losses. The risk is also costly. Ryuk ransoms are often several hundred thousand dollars. For larger enterprises, the ransom can reach millions. The alternative is to setup from scratch the mission-critical elements of your Information Technology environment. Without the availability of full information backups, this calls for a wide range of skills, professional project management, and the willingness to work non-stop until the job is completed.

For twenty years, Progent has provided professional Information Technology services for companies throughout the US and has earned Microsoft's Partnership certification status in the Datacenter and Cloud Productivity competencies. Progent's team of subject matter experts (SMEs) includes engineers who have been awarded high-level certifications in foundation technologies such as Microsoft, Cisco, VMware, and popular distributions of Linux. Progent's security consultants have earned internationally-renowned industry certifications including CISA, CISSP, ISACA CRISC, GIAC, and CMMC 2.0. (Refer to Progent's certifications). Progent in addition has expertise in financial systems and ERP applications. This breadth of experience gives Progent the skills to rapidly identify critical systems and re-organize the remaining parts of your network system after a crypto-ransomware attack and rebuild them into an operational system.

Progent's ransomware team of experts utilizes state-of-the-art project management systems to coordinate the complex restoration process. Progent appreciates the urgency of working rapidly and in unison with a customer's management and IT team members to prioritize tasks and to put the most important applications back on-line as fast as possible.

Case Study: A Successful Ransomware Virus Recovery
A customer engaged Progent after their network was taken over by the Ryuk ransomware. Ryuk is thought to have been developed by Northern Korean government sponsored hackers, suspected of using techniques leaked from the U.S. NSA organization. Ryuk targets specific companies with little or no tolerance for operational disruption and is one of the most lucrative versions of ransomware malware. Major victims include Data Resolution, a California-based data warehousing and cloud computing firm, and the Chicago Tribune. Progent's customer is a small manufacturing business located in Chicago with around 500 employees. The Ryuk event had disabled all business operations and manufacturing processes. The majority of the client's backups had been online at the time of the attack and were damaged. The client was taking steps for paying the ransom (more than $200,000) and hoping for good luck, but ultimately reached out to Progent.

"I cannot speak enough about the support Progent provided us throughout the most stressful period of (our) businesses life. We had little choice but to pay the cybercriminals if it wasn't for the confidence the Progent experts provided us. The fact that you could get our e-mail and essential applications back into operation quicker than seven days was beyond my wildest dreams. Every single consultant I interacted with or communicated with at Progent was laser focused on getting my company operational and was working non-stop to bail us out."

Progent worked hand in hand the client to quickly get our arms around and assign priority to the key services that had to be restored to make it possible to continue business functions:

  • Active Directory (AD)
  • Electronic Mail
  • Financials/MRP
To start, Progent followed Anti-virus event mitigation industry best practices by stopping the spread and clearing up compromised systems. Progent then began the task of recovering Microsoft Active Directory, the core of enterprise networks built upon Microsoft Windows technology. Microsoft Exchange messaging will not operate without AD, and the customer's financials and MRP system used Microsoft SQL Server, which needs Windows AD for authentication to the databases.

In less than two days, Progent was able to restore Windows Active Directory to its pre-penetration state. Progent then completed rebuilding and hard drive recovery of mission critical servers. All Microsoft Exchange Server data and configuration information were usable, which accelerated the rebuild of Exchange. Progent was also able to assemble non-encrypted OST files (Outlook Off-Line Data Files) on staff PCs and laptops in order to recover email messages. A not too old offline backup of the client's accounting/ERP software made them able to recover these vital applications back on-line. Although a lot of work still had to be done to recover totally from the Ryuk damage, the most important systems were returned to operations quickly:

"For the most part, the production manufacturing operation survived unscathed and we delivered all customer shipments."

During the following few weeks important milestones in the restoration project were accomplished in tight collaboration between Progent engineers and the customer:

  • In-house web sites were brought back up without losing any information.
  • The MailStore Microsoft Exchange Server exceeding 4 million archived messages was restored to operations and available for users.
  • CRM/Customer Orders/Invoicing/Accounts Payable (AP)/Accounts Receivables (AR)/Inventory capabilities were 100% functional.
  • A new Palo Alto Networks 850 firewall was installed.
  • 90% of the user desktops and notebooks were fully operational.

"A huge amount of what transpired in the initial days is mostly a blur for me, but we will not forget the dedication each and every one of your team put in to give us our company back. I've been working together with Progent for the past 10 years, possibly more, and each time I needed help Progent has outperformed my expectations and delivered as promised. This situation was a life saver."

Conclusion
A probable company-ending catastrophe was dodged with hard-working experts, a broad array of technical expertise, and close collaboration. Although in hindsight the ransomware virus attack described here would have been identified and stopped with modern security technology and NIST Cybersecurity Framework or ISO/IEC 27001 best practices, user education, and well thought out incident response procedures for information backup and proper patching controls, the reality is that government-sponsored cyber criminals from Russia, North Korea and elsewhere are relentless and are an ongoing threat. If you do get hit by a ransomware attack, feel confident that Progent's team of experts has proven experience in ransomware virus defense, mitigation, and data restoration.

"So, to Darrin, Matt, Aaron, Dan, Claude, Jesse, Arnaud, Allen and Chris (along with others that were involved), thank you for letting me get rested after we made it past the first week. All of you did an amazing effort, and if any of your team is around the Chicago area, dinner is on me!"
