Ransomware : Your Crippling Information Technology Catastrophe
Ransomware Remediation ExpertsCrypto-Ransomware has become a too-frequent cyber pandemic that represents an existential threat for businesses of all sizes unprepared for an attack. Different iterations of ransomware such as Reveton, CryptoWall, Bad Rabbit, NotPetya and MongoLock cryptoworms have been out in the wild for years and continue to inflict havoc. Newer strains of ransomware such as Ryuk, Maze, Sodinokibi, Netwalker, Conti or Egregor, as well as more unnamed newcomers, not only do encryption of on-line data files but also infect most available system protection mechanisms. Data synched to the cloud can also be ransomed. In a vulnerable system, it can make automatic restoration impossible and effectively knocks the datacenter back to zero.

Getting back online services and data following a ransomware intrusion becomes a race against the clock as the targeted business tries its best to contain the damage, remove the crypto-ransomware, and restore business-critical activity. Due to the fact that ransomware needs time to move laterally, penetrations are frequently launched on weekends and holidays, when successful penetrations in many cases take longer to detect. This multiplies the difficulty of promptly mobilizing and coordinating a knowledgeable response team.

Progent has a variety of solutions for securing businesses from ransomware attacks. Among these are team member education to help recognize and avoid phishing exploits, ProSight Active Security Monitoring (ASM) for remote monitoring and management, along with setup and configuration of the latest generation security gateways with machine learning technology from SentinelOne to discover and extinguish zero-day cyber threats rapidly. Progent also provides the assistance of expert ransomware recovery professionals with the talent and perseverance to rebuild a compromised network as soon as possible.

Progent's Ransomware Recovery Services
Following a ransomware invasion, sending the ransom in cryptocurrency does not guarantee that merciless criminals will respond with the codes to decrypt all your files. Kaspersky Labs estimated that 17% of ransomware victims never recovered their files even after having sent off the ransom, resulting in additional losses. The risk is also costly. Ryuk ransoms are often a few hundred thousand dollars. For larger organizations, the ransom demand can reach millions of dollars. The alternative is to piece back together the vital components of your Information Technology environment. Without the availability of complete data backups, this requires a broad range of skills, professional team management, and the capability to work 24x7 until the recovery project is completed.

For two decades, Progent has made available certified expert IT services for companies across the U.S. and has earned Microsoft's Partnership certification status in the Datacenter and Cloud Productivity competencies. Progent's pool of subject matter experts includes engineers who have attained high-level industry certifications in important technologies such as Microsoft, Cisco, VMware, and popular distributions of Linux. Progent's cyber security specialists have earned internationally-renowned certifications including CISM, CISSP-ISSAP, ISACA CRISC, GIAC, and CMMC 2.0. (See Progent's certifications). Progent also has experience in financial management and ERP applications. This breadth of expertise provides Progent the capability to efficiently determine important systems and integrate the surviving parts of your IT system after a ransomware attack and assemble them into a functioning system.

Progent's recovery team of experts has best of breed project management tools to orchestrate the complex restoration process. Progent knows the importance of working swiftly and together with a client's management and Information Technology team members to assign priority to tasks and to put essential services back on-line as fast as possible.

Customer Story: A Successful Ransomware Incident Restoration
A small business contacted Progent after their network system was crashed by the Ryuk ransomware. Ryuk is thought to have been launched by Northern Korean government sponsored criminal gangs, possibly using approaches exposed from the United States National Security Agency. Ryuk seeks specific businesses with limited room for operational disruption and is among the most lucrative examples of ransomware viruses. High publicized organizations include Data Resolution, a California-based info warehousing and cloud computing firm, and the Chicago Tribune. Progent's client is a regional manufacturer located in the Chicago metro area and has about 500 staff members. The Ryuk attack had brought down all essential operations and manufacturing processes. The majority of the client's information backups had been on-line at the time of the intrusion and were destroyed. The client was evaluating paying the ransom (more than $200,000) and praying for good luck, but ultimately brought in Progent.

"I can't speak enough in regards to the help Progent provided us during the most stressful time of (our) businesses life. We may have had to pay the cyber criminals except for the confidence the Progent team afforded us. The fact that you could get our messaging and critical servers back faster than five days was beyond my wildest dreams. Each staff member I worked with or messaged at Progent was amazingly focused on getting us restored and was working breakneck pace on our behalf."

Progent worked together with the customer to quickly assess and prioritize the most important areas that had to be restored to make it possible to resume business operations:

  • Windows Active Directory
  • Microsoft Exchange
  • MRP System
To get going, Progent adhered to AV/Malware Processes penetration mitigation industry best practices by stopping the spread and cleaning systems of viruses. Progent then began the process of bringing back online Microsoft Active Directory, the foundation of enterprise networks built on Microsoft Windows Server technology. Microsoft Exchange messaging will not function without Windows AD, and the customer's accounting and MRP software leveraged SQL Server, which depends on Active Directory for access to the data.

In less than 48 hours, Progent was able to rebuild Active Directory to its pre-attack state. Progent then accomplished setup and hard drive recovery on mission critical servers. All Exchange Server schema and attributes were usable, which accelerated the restore of Exchange. Progent was able to find local OST files (Outlook Offline Data Files) on team workstations to recover mail messages. A recent off-line backup of the customer's accounting systems made them able to recover these essential applications back online for users. Although a lot of work needed to be completed to recover completely from the Ryuk event, critical systems were returned to operations quickly:

"For the most part, the production line operation did not miss a beat and we delivered all customer deliverables."

Throughout the next month important milestones in the restoration project were completed in tight cooperation between Progent consultants and the customer:

  • Self-hosted web applications were brought back up with no loss of data.
  • The MailStore Microsoft Exchange Server with over 4 million archived messages was brought on-line and accessible to users.
  • CRM/Customer Orders/Invoicing/Accounts Payable/Accounts Receivables (AR)/Inventory modules were 100% functional.
  • A new Palo Alto 850 firewall was brought on-line.
  • Ninety percent of the user desktops and notebooks were back into operation.

"So much of what went on that first week is mostly a blur for me, but our team will not forget the dedication all of your team accomplished to help get our business back. I've been working with Progent for the past 10 years, possibly more, and every time Progent has outperformed my expectations and delivered as promised. This event was the most impressive ever."

Conclusion
A probable business extinction disaster was evaded through the efforts of top-tier experts, a wide spectrum of IT skills, and close collaboration. Although in post mortem the ransomware incident described here would have been prevented with modern security systems and NIST Cybersecurity Framework best practices, staff training, and appropriate security procedures for information backup and applying software patches, the fact remains that state-sponsored hackers from Russia, China and elsewhere are tireless and will continue. If you do fall victim to a ransomware incident, remember that Progent's team of professionals has substantial experience in ransomware virus blocking, remediation, and information systems recovery.

"So, to Darrin, Matt, Dan, Claude, Jesse, Arnaud, Allen, Tony and Chris (along with others who were involved), thank you for letting me get rested after we got past the first week. All of you did an amazing job, and if any of your guys is around the Chicago area, dinner is on me!"
